Description

It is generally accepted that the ability to develop large-scale distributed applications that are extensible and independent of infrastructure details has lagged seriously behind other developments in cyberinfrastructure. As the sophistication and scale of distributed infrastructure increases, the complexityof successfully developing and deploying distributed applications increases bothquantitatively and in qualitatively newer ways.

In this talk, we will present a fresh perspective to distributed applications and distributed cyberinfrastructure using SAGA. SAGA provides the basic and most commonly used functionality for a broad range of distributed applications and provides the building blocks upon which to construct higher-levels of functionality and abstractions. We will show how a SAGA-based approach can address many common barriers in the development and execution of distributed applications, while facilitating the development of applications that by design are -- Interoperable, Scale-Out, Extensible, Adaptive and Simple.

About the speaker

Shantenu is the Director for Cyberinfrastructure Development at the Center for Computation and Technology (CCT), and a Research Professor in Computer Science at Louisiana State University (LSU). He is also a theme-leader at the e-Science Institute, Edinburgh and a Visiting Researcher at UCL. His research interests lie at the triple point of Computational Science, Cyberinfrastructure Development and Computer Science.  His Research is supported by a broad range of sources, including UK-EPSRC, US-NSF and NIH as well with SUN and Google (GSOC). He is a co-PI for $2.6M NSF award that enables LSU/LONI participation as a TeraGrid Resource Provider. Shantenu leads the SAGA project and is currently working on writing a book on "Abstractions for Distributed Applications and Systems: A Computational Science Perspective" to be published by Wiley in 2010.
