Evaluation of the C++ Binding to the Oracle Database System

Dirk Geppert and Krzysztof Nienartowicz, CERN/IT

Date: Wednesday, 20 November 2002, 16 hours
Place: IT Auditorium, building 31/3-004
Organiser: Julian Blake, IT/ADC

Abstract

With version 9i of the Oracle data management system the Oracle C++ Call Interface, OCCI, was introduced. CERN's Information Technology Database Group was actively involved in the product's early beta testing program. This seminar will give a basic overview of OCCI features and report on the evaluation of using an object-relational database management system together with its C++ binding in the context of high-energy physics' data storage and applications.

About the speakers: In 2001 Dirk Geppert started to work as a fellow in CERN's IT Database Group where he worked on the evaluation of the object-oriented features of the Oracle relational database management system and its C++ binding in particular. In 2002 he became a staff member in CERN IT/DB, working on the COMPASS Data Migration, the setup of a cluster database service and the LCG project.

Krzysztof Nienartowicz joined CERN in November 2001 as a fellow. He worked on feasibility study of physics analysis using Oracle and RDBMS in general and has been involved in RAC performance study. He has partaken in COMPASS migration. Prior to joining CERN he had worked on integration of globally accessible economics databases being coauthor of distributed economic data acquisition systems as well. Before Oracle, he had had opportunity to develop and deploy systems with other commercial databases including Sybase, MSSQL and mainframe based datamarts, using message oriented middleware - in USA, UK and Poland.
