Tutorial: Software Packaging with RPM

Jan Iven, CERN/IT

Date: Wednesday, 23 October 2002, 16 hours
Place: IT Auditorium, building 31/3-004
Organiser: Julian Blake, IT/ADC

Abstract

RPM, the Red Hat Package Manager tool, has established itself as the software distribution format of choice for most major Linux distributions. It is also the primary distribution format used in the European DataGrid project, and possibly in LCG.

This tutorial presents motivation, concepts and best practices of software packaging using RPM. It is intended to help software developers at CERN with the transition from other methods of delivery (over AFS or as .tar files) toward RPM, using real-life examples.

About the speaker: Jan Iven is the section leader of IT-ADC-LE, responsible for Linux support inside CERN IT division.
