ABSTRACT

Geant-4 is a next generation detector-simulation package being developed by an international HEP collaboration. We have used Software Engineering and Object Oriented analysis and design methods to build Geant-4 in C++. Its first beta release will take place this summer.

I will provide an overview of the features included for the geometrical description of detectors and the navigation within it.

An important capability of Geant-4 is that it can read the solid model of a detector from Computer Aided Design systems, via STEP files (STEP is an ISO standard). So for the first time in HEP we can simulate using the exact engineering model of a detector, with complex solids bounded by splines and NURBS.

Other innovative features I will describe include
