ABSTRACT

The goal of my talk is to introduce you into the concept of indexed digital video repositories. Such repositories use enormous volumes of video data in addition to still images, and text, as well as more conventional numeric and character data. In particular, distributed digital video repositories are rapidly emerging as a preferred model of a "library of the future" in medical, scientific and intelligence applications.

Managing huge volumes of digital video requires non-traditional approaches to content based indexing and database design. Relational database system that store images as untyped binary large objects (BLOBS) do not understand the contents of the BLOB.

This talk will discuss a novel methodology based on real time dynamic hyperlinking in Object Oriented Database Environment. In this approach multiple content and context based indices are linked to a sequence of video frames, thus producing indices that capture spatial, temporal and context based information. Such indices provide the foundation for natural language queries. Examples of video indexing strategies best suited for rapid access, retrieval and reuse of digital video objects will also be discussed.
